Our Department of Anthropology

At the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa, the Department of Anthropology is strongly committed to critical inquiry, advocacy and educational outreach. We pursue comparative and holistic studies of human communities, past and present, using diverse methods including material, biological and cultural analysis. We are the leading department of anthropology in Hawai'i, the Pacific, and Asia with full subfield offerings in archaeology, cultural anthropology, and physical anthropology along with specializations in applied archaeology, ecology, discursive practices, and medical anthropology. There are more than 30 faculty on the Mānoa campus who specialize in anthropology. Our work cuts across geographic and temporal boundaries to understand historical relationships between human communities and their environments as well as the social, cultural, and political dynamics of contemporary societies.

Our undergraduate and graduate degree programs offer opportunities for professional development through coursework, research, and collaborative projects. We have a growing and vigorous undergraduate program where we offer a variety of special programs, including field training in archaeology and cultural anthropology.

Students in anthropology find a number of professional and service employment opportunities. Increasingly, anthropological knowledge and expertise is also applied toward developmental and global issues. Among our alumni we count university faculty and administrators, government officials, entrepreneurs, social and environmental advocates, school teachers, and employees of non-governmental organizations.
